ECIRPD’s Brownfield Grant Videos

Brownfields are properties where redevelopment may be complicated due to the presence of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants like petroleum, asbestos, lead paint, mold, chemicals, and other environmental hazards. These sites can also include mine-scarred lands.

Despite many brownfields being in prime locations, concerns about environmental contamination, liability, and cleanup costs often deter businesses, leading them to develop on untouched rural lands instead. This has contributed to the misconception that brownfields are “throwaway” properties with no future use. However, revitalizing brownfields is a powerful way to foster economic growth and bring numerous benefits to a community.

Check out our two latest videos on our YouTube channel. The two videos are General Grant Information and Revitalized Community Grant. This goes over how the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, has awarded a grant to the East Central Indiana Regional Planning District to help prepare for the healthy redevelopment of the Whitely, Industry and Mckinley neighborhoods as well as some other Muncie area sites. Federal funding has been given to evaluate properties, particularly in these three communities, to determine if prior business operations have caused any contamination in the ground and to make plans to clean them up.
