Employee Spotlight: Mathew Nichols

Muncie native Mathew Nichols has always called the city home. Growing up on the South Side near 29th Street and Beacon, Mathew’s experiences and surroundings laid the foundation for his personal and professional journey. A graduate of Wapahani High School and Ivy Tech Community College, where he earned a degree in Business Administration, Mathew has built a career focused on community development and meaningful impact.

Music has been Mathew’s personal lifelong passion. During high school, he was deeply involved in the band, mastering the saxophone in all its variations and becoming fluent in piano, which continues to inspire him. One of his most memorable achievements came in his junior year when he and a group of friends formed a band to perform *“Johnny B. Goode”* at the school talent show. Their performance won first place, cementing Mathew’s love for creativity and collaboration.

Mathew credits much of his success to his family. His two younger brothers, students at Central High School, are active members of the wrestling team and the Spirit of Muncie Marching Band, which celebrated a State championship this year. Watching their dedication has been a source of pride and motivation for Mathew, reminding him of the power of teamwork and perseverance.

Professionally, Mathew has found his calling at the East Central Indiana Regional Planning District (ECIRPD). He began as an intern through the EPA Grant, where he worked closely with Ken Hudson (Executive Director of the Whitely Community Council) and the Whitley Community Council on economic and community development initiatives.

Today, Mathew serves as a Community Development Planner under the SS4A Grant, focusing on creating an action plan to improve roadway and pedestrian safety. Additionally, he has joined ECIRPD’s grant writing team working toward becoming a professional grant writer. Mathew is passionate about contributing to projects that drive progress and support the region he calls home.

At ECIRPD, Mathew has had the privilege of learning from mentors like Ken, Bill, and Michelle, whose guidance has shaped his career and inspired his commitment to making a difference.
