LifeLine Pilots: Providing Free Flights for Patients in Need

On Monday, March 9th, the ECI Regional Planning District met with Lauren Prazeau from LifeLine Pilots to learn more about the organization and the services they provide.

LifeLine Pilots was founded in 1981 by Wanda Whitsitt of Champaign, IL. It began as a small group of pilots who envisioned using their unique skills to help others. The pilots transported blood, tissue, and organs to medical centers before eventually flying passengers experiencing barriers to accessing medical care to non-emergency appointments. In their first year, they completed fewer than ten flights. The following year, that number grew to 100 flights. Today, the organization is working toward a goal of completing 1,300 flights this year.

LifeLine Pilots is dedicated to spreading awareness among the public, healthcare professionals, and anyone who may benefit from their services. The organization primarily operates within a 10-state region, although pilots fly beyond that area when needed. Most volunteer pilots are based within those ten states and typically travel between 100 and 1,000 miles from their home airports. LifeLine Pilots receives no government funding and relies on grants and donor support.

This service is completely free for patients who need transportation to scheduled medical appointments anywhere in the United States. Patients who are minors may travel with up to two companions, while adult patients may bring one companion. Requests for flights can be made either by the patient or by the doctor. The process typically takes four to five business days, which allows time for the physician to complete the required approval.

Flights are conducted in small, privately owned aircrafts operated by volunteer pilots who are passionate about helping others. The service is airport-to-airport, meaning patients will need to arrange transportation between the airport and their medical facility. However, LifeLine Pilots ensures that patients will always have transportation arranged for their return home. If they are unable to accommodate a request due to high demand, they will help connect individuals with other organizations that may be able to assist.
