Innovation Connector Receives Prestigious Soft Landings Designation

Since its beginning in 2003, the Innovation Connector (IC) has been a cornerstone of business support in East Central Indiana. Over the years, the IC has evolved into a thriving hub where entrepreneurs and businesses can grow and succeed. This year, the Innovation Connector achieved a significant milestone by receiving a “Soft Landings Designation” from the International Business Innovation Association (InBIA), making it the only organization in Indiana to earn this honor. Currently, there are less than thirty communities in the world that have the Soft Landings Designation.

A Soft Landings designation is awarded to organizations that provide crucial support to foreign businesses entering a new country and community. It ensures these businesses experience a smooth transition, or a “Soft Landing” as they establish operations. This recognition highlights the Innovation Connector’s capabilities and enhances Delaware County’s appeal to international companies considering East Central Indiana as a potential location for their North American headquarters.

The process to receive this designation is rigorous, involving extensive application and peer review. Ted Baker, CEO and Executive Director of the Innovation Connector was motivated to pursue this designation because the IC was already performing many of the services outlined in the Soft Landings program. For Baker, who has been a member of the InBIA for 15 years, the benefits of this program are clear.

Empowered by the support and guidance of Delaware County Economic Development (DCED) and the East Central Indiana Regional Planning District (ECIRPD), the Innovation Connector offers comprehensive support to businesses relocating to the Muncie community, extending its services beyond just foreign companies. From legal services and housing to equipment and hiring, the IC facilitates a full array of resources to ensure these businesses integrate successfully into the community.

DCED and the ECIRPD have played and continue to play an essential role in identifying and attracting businesses to the region, making it possible for the Innovation Connector to provide its full suite of services. The collaboration between these organizations is pivotal to the region’s success in securing international investments and fostering economic growth.  Collaboration to the extent that is happening in Delaware County is rarely heard of.  And, as Baker said,

“There aren’t many organizations doing what we are doing. It is a privilege to work together with these organizations.  Together, we are making an impact in our community.”

The Innovation Connector has assisted several foreign businesses, including INOX, Clearline Technologies, Trebi Robotics, and VI-TECHNIK, with support from the ECIRPD and the Delaware County Economic Development Team. These partnerships ensure businesses choose to locate in Delaware County and thrive once they arrive.

Baker envisions the Soft Landings designation will significantly benefit Delaware County by enhancing exposure and acceptance, demonstrating the region’s commitment to welcome and facilitate all businesses who seek Indiana as a place to have their businesses. This designation also positions the Innovation Connector within a national network of similar organizations, fostering valuable relationships that can lead to further opportunities.

Looking ahead, the Innovation Connector, with continued support from the DCED and the ECIRPD, plans to expand its support services better to assist foreign and local businesses. By making its services more broadly available and adapting to the needs of new businesses, the Innovation Connector is poised to nurture these companies and help them make a significant impact in the community. The commitment to economic development and innovative business incubation ensures that Delaware County remains an attractive destination for businesses of all sizes and origins.

Baker emphasized, “The more we can tell our story, the better.” With the Soft Landings designation and strong partnerships with the ECIRPD and other local organizations, the Innovation Connector is well on its way to writing Delaware County’s next successful chapter.
