Community Spotlight: Richards Restaurant

Richards Restaurants has been a Hoosier favorite since 1967, founded by Don Strong in Bluffton, Indiana. Don’s journey began with The Snug diner and The Embers in Portland, where his mother, Gladys, made homemade pies and salads. With support from his wife, Mona Jean, and family, Don built a thriving business. He also acquired Bearcreek Farms, creating a countryside retreat for families and the community.

By 1970, Richards opened its first Fort Wayne location and grew to 14 restaurants, a franchised location, Bearcreek Farms Resort, and commissary facilities. Known for signature dishes like fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, and pumpkin pie, Richards delivers the down-home goodness Hoosiers love.

What makes Richards truly special is the people—from the hardworking staff to the loyal guests who come back time and time again. For many, Richards Restaurants aren’t just places to eat; they’re part of family traditions. Some customers who dined at Richards as children now bring their own kids, while others visit daily, enjoying the friendly atmosphere and consistent, hearty meals.

East Central Indiana is home to three Richards Restaurants locations: in Portland, Marion, and Hartford City. As a beloved family-owned chain, Richards embodies a timeless legacy of warmth, exceptional quality, and a deep connection to the community. At Richards, you’re more than a customer—you’re family.
